Saving face

Spring rains are hitting Washington pretty hard.

Today, near K Street, a negligible sight was a microcosm of the mores here.

A man made an awkward, and from where I sat, a nonsensical dance down the street in the pouring rain. He wore no raincoat nor held an umbrella and moved while leaning forward, hunched, but without hitching his sport coat up to shield his head.

Ironically, this made him a larger target for the raining falling from above — much more surface area to hit.

The only benefit I saw from this posture was that his face wasn’t getting wet, so maybe he didn’t have to immediately feel the reality of his situation.

Are the truckers’ protests already obsolete?

Independent truck drivers are organizing a protest in Washington today, in response to rising gas prices. While I caught a listing for the event in the AP Daybook, I haven’t witnessed it — I have taken in first and second-hand accounts of their lap around around downtown Washington (specifically to honk at the White House and the Capitol), and their rally (I think they parked their trucks at RFK after their lap).

They plan another lap to disrupt rush hour later, I’m told.

Meanwhile, BoingBoing has a post citing the New York Sun’s reporting on some speculation that American gas prices will have to be more in line with Europe’s (approaching $10 a gallon) sooner rather than later.

Right wing Spring fashion

It’s a beautiful Spring day in Washington. The air was cool this morning, sweet even.

I guess for others that would be “high pollen count.”

A very remote acquaintance threw a couple of thoughts out into the ether: “Going to my Vast Right Wing Conspiracy Board Meeting at Grover’s Place,” and then “[Hope] to bring back Chuck Taylor Converse sneaks as a fashion staple.”

If only he were a part of the Vast Left Wing Conspiracy. They’ve been wearing them constantly for years.
